Simply live well
5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day! This simple rule of thumb is at the heart of the campaign, 5 a day. Because if you eat 3 portions of vegetables and 2 portions of fruit a day, you will be feeding your body many important substances.
Let’s be honest: Have you already eaten five portions of fruit and vegetables today? Not just because fruit and vegetables taste good and they offer something to suit everyone’s taste. If you eat five portions a day, you will be giving your body what it needs in terms of vitamins, minerals and fibre as well as secondary plant compounds — also referred to as bioactive substances or phytochemicals. Among others, they include flavonoids, carotenoids, glycosinolates and sulphides. These have a positive effect on well-being and strengthen the body’s resistance. In addition, fruit and vegetables can protect from so-called civilisation diseases such as high blood pressure and cardiovascular illnesses.
The campaign is run by 5 am Tag e.V. (5 a day Association). The association’s target is to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables people eat. Members include renowned scientific organisations such as Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung (German Nutrition Society) and Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft (German Cancer Society) but also health insurance companies, ministries, foundations and numerous partners from the world of business.
The 5 a day campaign has been supported by the European Union since 2002. It is run under the aegis of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection and the Federal Ministry of Health.
