GFI: strong international presence for Germany’s fresh food markets

From February 4 to 6 around 65,000 professional visitors from over 135 countries came to look and learn at the biggest fair event the international fruit trade has ever seen - the Fruit Logistica. Some 2,800 exhibitors from 83 countries presented the entire range of goods and services offered by every link in the trade chain, and a great many innovations too.

Germany’s fresh food markets have been a firm fixture at the Fruit Logistica for more than 10 years, recommending themselves to visitors as reliable business partners. At the GFI joint stand they showcase their expertise in the task of providing modern, diversified and top-quality hubs for the trade in fresh produce.

Uwe Kluge, chairman of the GFI board and managing director of Bremen Wholesale Market, returned a positive verdict about GFI’s time at this year’s fair: “Public response once again proved how important our stand is as a platform where our many wholesalers and importers can communicate with us and others. It offers a real marketplace for in-depth talks and negotiations with customers and suppliers from all over the world. Therefore we shall be using the same concept for our stand - “Diversity in Unity ” – when we return in 2016.”

As before, the GFI stand had numerous programmes tailored to specific target groups. Once again, the large info counter gave visitors to the fair a central point to head for when in search of information and new contacts. This year Apimex, a trader from Munich Wholesale Market, and Elbegarten, Don Limón and Port International from Hamburg used the exclusive “partner area” to present their companies.

Important topics for the future
Wholesale market representatives from every metropolitan region in Germany were available for talks with potential partners. They discussed important topics for the future, such as new energy concepts for markets, expanding the customer base and range of produce and the unabated demand for regional products.

New marketing partners and sponsoring members
As was to be expected, networking paid off for GFI itself. Uwe Kluge says: “As far as marketing cooperation is concerned, we shall be further expanding our long-standing partnerships with Zespri and Enza in 2015. We also had some very good talks with Chiquita and with EOS from South Tyrol, which open up some interesting prospects. We have also gained two new sponsoring members; Michael und Andreas Marker oHG from Hamburg and the Bavarian Fruit Importing and Wholesale Association (Verband des Bayerischen Fruchtimport- und Großhandels e.V.)".

„5th Bavaria Meet” – traditional supper
The nutrition cluster, alp Agency for Bavarian Foods, Munich Markets and the Bavarian State Agricultural Corporation (LfL) joined forces to organize the “Bavaria Meet” at the GFI stand on 05 February 2015. It was the fifth time in succession that this popular trade get-together had been held during the fair, which makes it something of a tradition. This year, as before, the platform was eagerly used by many companies for talks about different aspects of food retailing, growing, processing and conditioning fruit and vegetables.

Exchange among experts: Germany’s fresh food markets have exhibited at the Fruit Logistica since 2002, and since 2004 they have used the large GFI joint stand.
