Eliane Steinmeyer: New Managing Director at Hamburg Wholesale Market

At the beginning of February 2015 Torsten Berens, for many years managing director of Hamburg Wholesale Market, accepted a new professional challenge, becoming head of the Department for Crop Protection, Forests, Hunting and Fisheries at the Ministry for Economics, Transport and Innovation; on 19th March 2015 Eliane Steinmeyer became the new Wholesale Market director.

Steinmeyer has a degree in fiscal administration (“Diplom-Finanzwirtin”) and has worked in administrative roles for 27 years, primarily in buying and distribution. This August it will be 5 years since she began work as deputy managing director with management responsibility for Administration and Market Operations, Finance & Controls and Technical Operations; Ms Steinmeyer thus brings a wide range of experience to her new position.

425 firms operate on the market, providing 2,400 jobs; Hamburg Wholesale Market is thus a major business centre and important employer in the city. Hamburg Wholesale Market is the largest centre of fresh produce in North Germany; it covers 27.3 hectares (67.5 acres) and handles 1.5m tonnes of produce per annum valued at EUR 2bn.
