We’re off again! Over 250 markets in 45 regions will be taking part in the campaign “Experience your weekly market” from the middle of May onwards. This is Germany’s participation in the international movement “LYLM Love your local market” and it has been a fixture in the German weekly market scene for the last 5 years. In 2019, over 3,300 markets in 19 countries across Europe and the world will join in the celebrations — a new record.

“Based on the global LYLM theme for 2019 “Close to your heart”, the German campaign is being run under the banner “Herzensangelegenheit”, Uwe Kluge, Chairman of GFI and CEO for Duisburg Kontor GmbH, is pleased to report. “Because for us, the weekly market is a subject dear to our hearts! And our campaign focuses on what means the most to us: colourful market life in the open air, the close relationship between the dedicated traders and their customers on a human level as well as the freshness, variety, quality and regional emphasis of the produce. Taken all together, these are benefits which supermarkets and discount shops are unable to match.”

With their “subjects close to our hearts”, the themes of the campaign focus on the many advantages of weekly markets.

The main celebrations will take place in May and June 2019. The European launch of “Love your local market” is in Belgrad on 16 May, and the German launch of “Erlebe Deinen Markt” (Experience your market) in Leipzig on 10 May. When the starting gun is fired, consumers can look forward to many colourful and informative promotions and events at their weekly markets.

About “Love your local market” and “Experience your market”

“Love your local market” was set up in 2012 by NABMA (National Association of British Market Authorities) in England. In 2019, over 3,300 markets in 19 countries across Europe and the world will join in the celebrations. This association makes “Love your local market” the largest market event in the world.

This international movement was initiated by the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) in The Hague. Activities in Germany are coordinated by Verband GFI Deutsche Frischemärkte e.V. (Business Development Association of Germany’s fresh food markets) in Berlin.

The main aim is to communicate the special importance of shopping at your weekly market from a financial, social and cultural perspective.

The success of the campaign lies in its major impact on the public. “Experience your market” delivers a positive message in a powerful international and domestic network. The platform supports market suppliers and market operators on all levels and gives them new self-confidence and new pride. In spite of all the challenges which weekly market traders have to face, the focus of this festival is on enjoyment, fun, experiences and meaningful personal encounters.
